The International Symposium on Carbon Future (CF2024) was successfully held in Ordos, China on Aug. 16-18, 2024.  It is hosted by Chinese Society of Particuology, Ordos Laboratory and Carbon Future. 

CF2024 is co-chaired by Prof. Fei Wei from Tsinghua University and Prof.Junwang Tang (CAE) from Tsinghua University with the theme of “Towards a sustainable future”. Facing the key and hot development directions related to “carbon”, CF2024 brings together world-renowned scholars to share the latest scientific research and discuss the technological frontiers, and aims to promote international academic exchanges and cooperation.

There are 5 plenary lectures, 28 keynote reports, 57 invited reports, and 5 posters in CF2024, and it has attracted total more than 240 well-known scholars, excellent students, and industry leaders on site. Meanwhile, CF2024 also did live broadcast on CSP Wechat video channel, CSP B Station, SciOpen live channel, Carbon Future Wechat video channel, and Nano Research wechat video channel, attaracting total more than 16 thousand audience online.

PART.1 Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony of CF2024 was held at 8:30 am on Aug. 16, 2024. Firstly, Prof. Junwang Tang (CAE) from Tsinghua University gave a brief introduction of CF2024. Then Prof. Fei Wei from Tsinghua University and Mr. Dong Bian from Science and Technology Bureau of Ordos delivered the opening address, extending a warm welcome to the participants and wishing CF2024 a complete success. Then the “2024 Carbon Future Young Investigator Award” and “2024 Carbon Future Young Investigator Honorable Mention Award” ceremony was held. Mr. Dong Bian from Science and Technology Bureau of Ordos, Prof. Mingyuan He from East China Normal University, Prof. Zhongfan Liu(CAE) from Peking University，Prof. Fei Wei from Tsinghua University and Mrs. Ling Ding from China Association for Science and Technology in Ordos presented certificates to the winners.

PART.3 Session Lectures

In addition to the plenary lectures, CF2024 also focused on 4 sessions, including “Future Carbon Materials”, “Future Energy Particles”, “Future Catalytic Particles”, “Carbon Future Symposia”, which covered a wide range of fields such as chemical industry, energy, materials, and environment. The reports were quite vivid and exciting, attracting many scholars in related fields to listen. The attendees actively participated in academic exchanges and discussions, and the reporters fully answered the questions from the audience. The academic atmosphere of the venue was strong, showing the innovative vitality of scientific and technological workers in the development of science and technology.

PART.4 Posters, Exhibition and Visit

Meanwhile, CF2024 has showed 5 posters from various academic disciplines. Researchers used concise and vivid charts, images, and text to introduce their research topics and findings. Attendees gathered around the posters, listening attentively, asking questions, and engaging in in-depth discussions with the authors. This interaction fostered interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration.

CF2024 also attracted JEOL, Shanghai Winner International Trade, Carbon Future, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Anhui SPECREATION, BSD INSTRUMENT, ZEISS, Sirius Instruments, CHIPNOVA, and other leading companies to attend. The latest scientific and technological products and application fields were displayed to the participants, which promoted the exchanges between enterprises, universities and research institutes.

     At the same time, Mr.Tizhuang Wang, Secretary-General of the CSP also presented the Excellent Unit Member plaques to Thermo Fisher Scientific (Shanghai) Co., LTD., and Zeiss Microscope/Carl Zeiss (Shanghai) Management Co., LTD.

During CF2024, Prof. Fei Wei from Tsinghua University led around 20 experts and scholars to visit the Ordos Laboratory, and introduced the development history of the laboratory, research results, project progress and other information.

PART.6 Conclusion

Till now, the International Symposium on Carbon Future (CF2024) has concluded. Thanks very much to each attendee for their wonderful sharing and enthusiastic participation. CF2024 has provided a high-level academic exchange platform for experts and scholars in related fields to share cutting-edge theories and application practices, discuss the latest research progress and future development direction, and promote academic sharing and exchange as well as industrial cooperation and interaction. It is conducive to improving the research and application level of carbon related fields.

 Organizers Introduction

Ordos Laboratory

Ordos Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as the "Laboratory") is a new research and development institution with modern energy and coal chemical industry as its main research and development direction under the leadership of the Ordos Municipal government. On August 6, 2023, it was approved by the government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as one of the first two autonomous regional laboratories in the field of coal chemical industry. On April 29, 2024, the laboratory was successfully approved to set up a state-level postdoctoral research workstation, becoming the first new research and development institution in the autonomous region to be approved a state-level postdoctoral research workstation. The laboratory is closely aligned with the major needs of the country and the transformation and upgrading of the energy industry in the autonomous region and Ordos City, focusing on scientific and technological innovation in the fields of clean and efficient utilization of coal, green and low-carbon, modern coal chemical industry, and new energy, giving full play to the overlapping advantages of university resources and major local industries, and carrying out basic research, applied research, and cutting-edge technology research and development. It can provide strong scientific and technological support for the transformation and upgrading of the energy industry in the region, and actively create a world-class advanced coal chemical innovation platform.

The laboratory focuses on “Four Directions”and “One Center”to build a platform for industry-study-research cooperation to promote the local transformation and industrialization of cutting-edge scientific and technological achievements. Four directions include new coal chemical industry, which use 10,000 tons of fluidized bed coal-based synthesis gas to aromatics, olefins industrial demonstration, to create a new name card of modern coal chemical industry in Inner Mongolia; Green energy, with renewable scenery and CO2 synthesis of green aviation coal as the starting point, proposed a new profitable industrial process under the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” target; The new scheme of green low-cost long-term energy storage is proposed in order to overcome the contradiction between the intermittent fluctuation characteristics of renewable energy and the continuous stability requirements of industrial processes. Macropreparation of new materials, based on fluidized-bed powder phase structure control and transfer enhancement, can realize the macropreparation of carbon-based/silicon-based high value-added new materials in fluidized bed. The “one center” refers to a high-end testing center with high time-space scanning transmission electron microscopy technology as a highlight, to serve the” four directions”.

Carbon Future (ISSN 2960-0561, https://www.sciopen.com/journal/2960-0561) is an open access, peer-reviewed and international interdisciplinary journal sponsored by Tsinghua University (and its Press). It serves as a platform for researchers, scientists, and industry professionals to share their findings and insights on carbon-related materials and processes, including catalysis, energy storage and conversion, as well as low carbon emission process and engineering. It features cutting-edge research articles, insightful reviews, perspectives, highlights, and news and views in the field of carbon (the article publishing charge is covered by the Tsinghua University Press).
